18th of May – Enjoying Tartu

Today I woke up late. I was up till late yesterday, so I didn´t feel like waking up early. But still, I saw a lot of Tartu in the afternoon. Not that many museums, but the city and the different districts.

For lunch I met a friend, Triin, who I met in Budapest several year ago, but we hadn´t met since. It was nice to see her, and she took me to a really nice café for lunch. You can buy the coffee by the liter and the salads are great. I´ve been told that the salads of this place are even known in Tallin.

Later we visited the botanical garden and the market place. Actually this last one is more similar to the Spanish markets, and not to the ones in other Eastern European countries.

We saw the statue of Kalevipoeg, near the river. He is the main character in the Estonian national epic poem. Triin is studying Estonian philology, so she really knows her way around this. She summarized the story, and I learned lots of other things about Estonian literature.

Later we walked around the soup district. Is an area where every street has names of things you use in a soup (Bean street, Potato Street …), so that’s how it got the name. Most of the houses there are wooden, and quite old. It used to be where the artists lived, because it was really cheap, but the houses can get very cold in winter.

Afterwards I said goodbye to Triin and I had dinner at Hanna´s place. And then I still had a beer with Kertu in another student pub. I have the feeling that I have been eating and drinking all the time since I got to Estonia. I even got back 3 of the 4 kilos I had lost in the previous 3 weeks.

18 de mayo – Disfrutando Tartu

Hoy me he levantado tarde. Ayer estuve despierto hasta tarde, por lo que no me apetecía levantarme pronto. Pero aun así todavía me ha dado tiempo a ver bastantes cosas de Tartu. Más que los museos he visitado la ciudad y los diferentes barrios.

Para comer he quedado con otra amiga, Triin, a quien había conocido en Budapest hace varios años, pero no nos habíamos visto desde entonces. Ha sido agradable volver a verla, y me ha llevado a una cafetería muy agradable. Puedes pedir café a litros y las ensaladas están muy bien. Me han dicho que estas ensaladas son 

famosas hasta en Tallin.

Luego hemos visitado el jardín botánico y el mercado. Este último es mucho más parecido a los mercados en casa, y no a los del este Europa.

Hemos visto la estatua de Kalevipoeg, cerca del rio. Él es el personaje principal de la epopeya nacional de Estonia. Triin estudia filología estonia, por lo que sabe bastante sobre estas cosas. Me ha contado la historia principal y he aprendido un montón de cosas sobre la literatura local.

Más tarde hemos paseado por el barrio de la sopa. En esta zona todas las calles tienen nombres de cosas que pueden ir en una sopa (calle Alubia, calle Patata …), por eso tiene este nombre. Casi todas las casas son de madera, y bastante viejas. Aquí solía ser donde vivían los artistas, porque era una zona muy barata, pero las casas son muy frías en invierno.

Después me he despedido de Triin y he ido a cenar a casa de Hanna. Pero después me he tomado una cerveza con Kertu en otro pub que no había visto antes. Tengo la sensación de que he estado bebiendo y comiendo desde que llegué a Estonia. Incluso he recuperado 3 de los 4 kilos que había perdido en las tres semanas de viaje.
