4th of May – 7th day cycling with lots of happenings

148,30 km Rovaniemi - Kokkokylä

Today was an amazing day. Many things happened, not all of them good, but I didn´t have time to get bored at all.

Yesterday I had decided that I wanted to go back to Santa´s Village to meet Santa Claus. Some of the people with whom I stayed said that it was really worth.

I left quite early, actually too early, so I went for a little ride around Rovaniemi (leaving my things with the couchsurfing host). I didn´t find it especially nice, so I left to Santa´s Village. There was no one there, I guess I was the first guest of the day. And it was snowing! (How not), but it gave the place an even more Christmassy feeling.

The first thing I did was visit Santa. To go to his office you have to go through several corridors full of decorations, I guess sometimes there is a huge line. I finally got to the door and got in. I was not sure what to say to him, but he is a really nice person. We talked a bit and we shacked hands. Yes, I shacked hands with Santa Claus!

I went to Rovaniemi again and I took my things. I packed the panniers and one of the straps broke. I was really afraid that this was going to happen. I was worried that I was not going to be able to ride like this, but it turns out that my foot doesn´t touch the pannier when I pedal. So I went like this all day. I will try to fix it in some big city, Joensuu or maybe Saint Petersburg.

I did several kilometers towards Ranua when I found camping place in a really nice place, next to a frozen lake. It looked quite closed, so I decided to go to the tables, but when I got closer a man came out of the bar. Anyway, I decided to go in and have a coffee. The man working there didn´t speak a word in English, but still he tried to talk about Bin Laden´s death. Later, seeing that I didn´t know any Finish words, he took a paper and a pen, and wrote me some basic things, which later he explained with mimic.

Finally I got to Ranua, I was quite tired and my knee was hurting a bit, so I decided to go to the library and see If I had some emails. The library was closed, but I stayed at the door eating a sandwich. Suddenly the librarian came out and asked if I wanted a coffee. She explained that the library was closed but that they were having a meeting with a writer, and that they had some snacks. The meeting didn´t start yet, so I had a coffee, talk to the people a little bit, but it seemed that only the librarian could speak good English. She let me use the internet, I checked my emails and left.

I decided to do around 20 kilometers more and then put the tent somewhere nice. When I was around 5 kilometers short, a car stoped in front of me and a woman came out making me some signs. I stopped, and it was the librarian! She said that she lived only 10 kilometers away and that it was ok with her and her husband for me to stay one night. I accepted the offer and she drew me a map to her place.

I followed the directions and I got to her house. I met her husband, who gave me a tour around the place. He explained how he had reconstructed the house and showed me the other buildings, and the fields. Later I helped him finish a greenhouse he was building.

Their house is next to a river. It´s really paradise. I saw all around while Pasi, the husband, explained everything.

Later they treated me for dinner and we talked some more. With the food we had “mahla”, which is water from the trees. It turned out that Pasi is a journalist working for the local newspaper, and he wanted to write an article about my trip. He took some pictures, and asked me a couple things. It´s the second local news paper I´m going to be in!

I leave a picture of Santa´s Village, Pasi taking the “mahla”, and the river Siuruanjoki, the river that passes next to the place i´m staying.

Por fin he llegado a la puerta y he entrado. ¡Sí, he conocido a Papá Noel!

He vuelto a Rovaniemi a coger mis cosas.

Además me ha dejado usar internet, he visto mis emails y me he seguido mi camino.
