19th of May – Huge unexpected expense and other Estonian surprises

146,41 km Tartu – Smiltene

The plan for today was to do less than 150 km, so I had already planned to leave a bit late. But as always, there were unexpected things that made me start much later.

When I woke up I took a shower and, when I got out, Kertu asked me if I wanted some Estonian sandwiches with an Estonian pastry. How could I refuse? So we had a nice, big, breakfast without any hurry. Estonian fish sandwich, and cake. (I will put the recipe of the Estonian cake at the bottom, if someone wants to try it).

Afterwards I decided to go to the supermarket and to the bike shop, to buy some good oil. As I commented a couple days back, the bike was not going very good and I thought it was this. On the way there I saw that one of my breaks was a bit loose, so I decided to ask them if they could fix it, it seemed something fast.
I gave them the bike, and they started asking several questions to my friend. It turns out that I had put the wheel and the handle bar wrong, destroying the chain and the back gears. They were really surprised that I could have done over 2000 km like that. So I had to change several things.

It was really expensive, but my friend said that they are trustworthy, that they were not trying to cheat me. So I ended up paying 140 Euros for the repairs. At least they hurried and a bit later than noon it was ready. One of the men working there was really interested and he also explained me that he was a mechanic in “La Vuelta” (the Spanish Tour), at the beginning of the 80´s.

After I got the bike back and I packed everything on it, and Kertu accompanied me to the city limits. I liked Tartu so much it was hard to leave and say goodbye to my friend. But as it happened with St. Petersburg, I had to go.

I did the way by small roads so it was peaceful, next to amazing fields. I know that it´s the same landscape I been seeing for the last couple of days. But the fields are so green and flat, with so many flowers, it amazes me.

On the way I could really feel that I have not been to doing exercise in the last two days, eating and drinking too much. And even one of my ankles started hurting. But, just then, there was a tourist information center. There they told me what to see around Otepää and they showed me a nicer rout.

One of the things I saw was an energy column. If you meditate next to it, or touching it, it fills you with positive energy. I thought that energy is something that I could use, so I stretched against the column.

From there on I didn’t stop much, probably because I was full of energy. On the way I saw that part of the road was closed due to constructions. But I asked a kid if it was possible to go, and he told me that his father went through there with the car every day. He was so young, around 6, and he spoke so well English, that I didn’t have any other choice but to trust him.

It’s true that some cars were going through there, but it was horrible. Around 10 km of a sand road. I could barely ride my bike. It’s true that avoiding the constructions would have been more distance, but for sure quicker.

From there till Latvia it was nice and easy. And the landscape changed again. Everything is full of forests, similar to the landscape I described when I was more north.

When I got to Smiltene I contacted the warmshowers host. He was still in Riga, but I met his girlfriend. We went to a very nice hotel, with beautiful gardens. Some of her friends worked there, so they were going to make a little fire. We joined them and it was really nice. They were already planning the celebrations of the summer solstice. I think I will try to pass through home on my way south, and it would be great to make it by this date.

They offered me some soup and cheese. They also gave me a local beer and a glass of sweet wine that they had done. Everything tasted very good. Later my host arrived and we were talking there till quite late, and then decided to meet again for breakfast the next day.
It’s my first time in Latvia, and actually the first time I met Latvians. But I can’t complain so far. Great landscape with forests, rivers and lakes, and incredibly nice people.

19 de Mayo – Un gasto inesperado y otras sorpresas

146,41 km Tartu – Smiltene

Casi no podía pedalear.
