14th of June – Taste of the Alps and the Mediterranean.

202,24 Ljubljana – Oderzo

Once again I had to leave a country to get to the next one. This time I had checked the elevation of route, not to have any surprises, and it ended up being easier than expected. Italy in the other hand it´s just what I thought, really Mediterranean.

I left the city at seven in the morning and it was raining a bit. According to the weather forecast it was not suppose to rain till 9, and then around 5pm I was going to have a storm close to my destination.

I got a bit wet because I didn´t want to put my raincoat, it was too warm. Luckily it didn´t rain long, and the sun came out for the rest of the day. The roads where pretty good, and it was well signed, so I didn´t have any problems. I wanted to do the first 50 km without stopping, to get rid of the hard part. It wasn´t bad at all, Slovakia was much harder.

And from Col, from where I could see already Italy, I had to go down all the way. The first 50 km where especially downhill, so I broke my speed record. Now it´s a bit over 70 km/h! And I didn´t stop till Italy. I was planning on stopping before, but I was going so fast that I didn’t even realized.

Some of the villages in the border have the names also in German, which is not surprising, but sometimes also in Hungarian. I don´t really know why, because I think this part was never Hungary, I will have to check it.

Here I can really feel I’m in Western Europe, the roads are much better, and the kind of town is more similar to what I´m used to. And this country is just as expected, pure Mediterranean: sun, warm, people riding bicycles and kids playing soccer in the streets.

In Latisana, I got tired of the main road and took smaller ones. It was a bit longer, but much nicer. Tomorrow I have few km, so I think I will try to do something similar. It may be longer, but it´s much more enjoyable. But there is really no problem in the main road, it´s just not as nice.

Finally I got to Oderzo, where I met my host, Andrea and Chiara, and his parents. They are students in Venice, but they live here, it´s really not far. After I took a shower they took me for a walk in the city. There I saw the first roman ruins I´ve seen in Italy. It´s funny that being a classical philologist I´ve never been in this country.

After walking in the center, with really great weather, we had a spritzer by the river. It´s similar to the Austrian one, but with orange flavor. With the drink they also gave us some snacks, just like in Spain. It was a great afternoon.

Then it was time for dinner, which we had at their place. And finally I had Spaghetti! I was saving myself till getting here to have this. I really like them, and in this country I think they taste even better! It was a great dinner.

Afterwards we talked a bit more and I saw my way for tomorrow. They recommended going through Treviso, which I was not planning on doing. So, I will, as I have an easy day till Verona.

I´m having already fun in Italy, and it´s fantastic that at last I can understand what they tell me when I ask for directions. I don´t even try to speak in English any more, Spanish it´s just fine. From here I just have to cross France and I will be already home.

Y, ¡finalmente he comido espaguetis!
