19th of June – Next to the Ligurian Coast, and crossing 3 international borders.

161,29 km Savona – Nice

I´m in the last country I will have to cross before getting to Spain, this really seems the end, but I still have around one fourth left. Today it was probably one of the most beautiful days of the whole trip. Many times I like places, but today I liked the whole tour.

When I woke up, Massimo, my host and me went for a walk. We bought some bread and something for lunch, and before returning home he showed me a couple places. I wanted to see the Sistine Chapel they have here, but it was too early. We also had a coffee in a bar owned by his friends. I like this places, it looks like a small village, where everybody knows each other.

I left a bit before 10 and I was expecting lots of traffic. It was a main road next to the cast on a sunny Sunday, but for my surprise it was quite empty. Maybe because it was late. It´s really beautiful this coast, it´s unbelievable. It´s all the time up and down, but the uphill are not that hard, and coming down the views are amazing. I took some pictures, that I will put down, but they don´t show how great it is.

My first stop was Alessio. Here they have a wall with signatures of lots of famous, and not so famous people, some of them are fictitious characters. Here I also asked in the tourist information office for a map, and it was a great decision. They showed me a bike road, which ended up being fantastic.

This bike road was only 20 km long, but it was the best bike road I´ve ever seen. It´s the highway for bikes. It goes on the old railway path, so there are even tunnels. I´ve never seen something like this. The only problem is that it ends suddenly, just after a sign saying that there are 6 km more. It finishes at the end of San Remo.

I haven´t been talking about how many cyclists there are. In Slovenia it was the first time since Finland that I saw some other cyclotourists. It was a couple, but they were going to hotels. But in Italy everybody uses the bike, even nuns. And of course, here in the coast there are thousands of people riding it for fun.

From San Remo I kept on the main road till France. Soon after I crossed the border to Monaco. It was nothing special, but for someone who knows the F1 circuit by heart, like me, it was fun to go in the same roads. From there I went straight to Nice, not without surprises. I tried to take a shortcut, but it was through a mountain. It was really hard going up.

But there was another surprise: my hosts live in another hill! Again going up, but I found the place easily, and the views they have from their terrace was totally worth it. I saw a really nice sunset while we were having dinner and chatting about bikes and trips. (Thanks a lot for everything!). The dinner was typical, with the cheese after the main dish, just before dessert.

They recommended me a couple thing to see on my way tomorrow, which is not going to be as easy as I thought, because it´s uphill. And they told me of the trip that they are going to do in a couple years, when her daughter grows a bit older. Around the whole France! Almost 6000km, and they are going to use a different bike, the Scorpion FX (you can see the picture below).

So as I said, I think today was one of the most beautiful days. When they finish the bike road all the way through the Ligurian coast (I hope in the next 50 years) I will come again, and do it much more slowly, and stopping in the beaches and towns.

Nunca he visto algo así.

Poco después he cruzado la frontera a Mónaco.
