12th of June – Day in the Slovenian hills eating wild plants

0 km Vojsko

Today was a fun day, I did something completely different, and I think I learned a lot. I went with my friend, Nik, to a workshop where they taught lots of edible plants of the Slovenian mountains. Maybe I will have to use my new knowledge some day.

We woke up quite early, as the workshop was almost 2 hours away in a mountainous area. We picked up a friend and we went till Vojsko. I like a lot this landscape, so many mountains, it´s amazing. I want to come back and just hike in the nature.

The workshop was in Slovenian, but Nik, and 4 of his friends, translated most of the things, and I could learn. I didn´t know anything, and I think it´s really useful to know wich plants are edible and how they taste, but still I would only eat a few of them that can´t be confused with anything else.

Some of them were used as species, other for salads. You can´t get full eating them, but I think they´re great to give flavour. If you know the plants, you can just take flour or potatoes, and make a really tasty dinner. When I come back I will try to put everything into practice.

Apart from this, it was also nice to walk in the hills for 4 hours. I don’t think I would have had the chance of doing this, with so short time that I’m going to be here. I´m really glad I joined my friend for the course.

At the end of the workshop, the teacher said that we should pick all the edible plants that we knew. And with them he cooked really delicious couscous. It had a unique flavor, and maybe I was hungry, but still I think it was very good.

Later we returned home and my friend had to study, so I planned my way. It might not look like it, but this trip takes lots of planning. I think couchsurfing is one of the best things of the trip, so I try to get hosts. I´m not sure I will get some in Italy, it looks pretty hard.

Afterwards we had dinner, pancakes. I really liked the ones with honey. It´s one done by the bees of a friend of his, and the flavor reminds me to the one I eat in the Basque country. I keep finding things that remind me of home.

I was quite tired, I don´t know why. So I decided to go to sleep, while my friend kept studying. I hope he has enough time to study for tomorrows exam, and that I didn´t keep him from passing his subject.

I like this country more and more, and I already made plans to return, I hope I can keep them. I decided to stay one more day and visit Ljubljana. But I will sleep there tomorrow, as it´s over 15 km closer to the place I want to reach in Italy the day after tomorrow.

0 km Vojsko
