7th of July – Into the heart of Andalusia Russian style

179,75km San Nicolas del Puerto – Arcos de la Frontera

Today was a bit different than usual. I started going downhill already, from now on I will basically have to go down till sea level. It´s good to know that everything that I climb, will go down soon. I also took a cut road, because it was in bad condition, so no cars for 40 km.

I wanted to wake up early, and I did, at 6, but as I never woke up at this time in Spain, for my surprise, it was still dark. So I went back to sleep. I forgot to set the alarm, and I woke up almost at 9, but it´s ok, I was tired, and I´m not in a hurry.

I had breakfast, and packed. I had forgotten how long it takes me to pack when I camp. At the end I left around 10. The road was good, downhill, and no cars. I really enjoyed it. What I don´t like in Spain is that people stare at me (like in many places), and usually I say hi to them, but in this country they don´t answer back, it´s weird.

Anyway, people I talk to in the villages are very nice, and talkative. Every time I stop to buy bread, or for water, I end up talking with them. I like the accent from this part of Andalusia, and their way of life it´s very relaxed. It reminds me a bit of Greek life.

Once in Carmona, I wanted to take a road going straight to Utrera, which was on my map, but the signs were confusing, so I asked. Everybody sent me the same direction, and I found it. The problem was that it had a huge sign saying that it was cut, so it was not allowed. I stopped there and started thinking if I should risk it, or how many km I would have to do going another way. Just then a car came from there and I asked. It turns out that it was in so bad condition that they cut it to fix it, but they didn´t start yet. And the car driver said that with the bike I should have no problem. And he was right!

It was great going in this road and only around 5 km, scattered on the whole ride, where horrible. In fact, it was not that bad, in Russia they would consider this a newly paved road. I also found a nice place to have lunch, between a few eucalyptuses. It was very peaceful, and when I went back to the bike, I had a visit! A little owl was walking around it! But I think it was either injured or too young to fly, because could not really run away.

From there I went quite straight to Arcos de la Frontera, but I could not take one of the roads I wanted to. According to Google maps there was a not paved road, that would save me 10 km. In my map there was only the beginning, but then it didn´t connect back to the main road. Still I decided to risk it, but in the first 500 meters it was blocked, saying that it was a private road. So I didn´t have to turn around a long distance, but I had to go through the national road.

Afterwards there were no more surprises, but that the town is in a hill. So I had to climb a lot to get there, and even more to my host’s house, but I found it without any problems. I called my host, Pilar and left my stuff in her house. Then she went to her swimming lesson, and I took a walk around the town. It´s a very beautiful Andalusian village, with white houses, and it´s very peaceful. And as it´s in a hill the views are amazing.

Going home I got a bit lost, but still I got to Pilar´s house at the same time as her. We had some cold dinner, with some wine of the town, and talked for a long time. She works in a farm that does camps in summer, so we agreed on going there for breakfast, and then we went to sleep.

Today´s ride was fine, but what I liked most is the walk around the town. In this trip I´m learning how to appreciate every place I cross, but what is surprising me most is Spain. I´m enjoying this country, I think I should take the time and travel around (maybe not by bike). Tomorrow it will be my last day, and I think after I get to Tarifa, I will take the bus home immediately.

He desayunado y he preparado las alforjas. Lo he disfrutado.
