1st of July – From the Ebro to the Duero

186,90 km Miranda de Ebro – Aranda de Duero.

Today was really exhausting. First it was more kilometers than I thought, and it was very hilly. Maybe I´m not in as good shape as I thought, but it was hard. Also I´m in the mood of finishing the trip. Maybe I´m getting tired of traveling, or that I was very comfortable at home. But I know that for one week I´m not going to quit.

Of course I left later than expected, but I it was ok, I was a bit lazy, and I was not trying to hurry. The first part was very nice, through regional roads, with butterflies flying around me. And I even took a not paved road. Now with the map I took from my parents I don´t get lost at all, so rarely I have to ask, but it was not easy to find the path in this little villages. And here they use the formal way of talking, which I barely use in my home town.

After a while I had to take the national road towards Burgos. That´s when I got tired, but not physically. I didn´t want to quit, I just wanted to stop cycling. As I have a friend in Burgos I called him, and he was there, so I thought about staying there the night, instead of going to Aranda. But later I decided to keep going, but meeting my friend in a village outside the city.

I had to wait quite a lot for him, but he brought me a sandwich of tortilla, made by his grandmother, so I could not be angry. It was nice talking to him, and it really cheered me up. Then I could keep going.

From there I was going to take some really small roads, and some of them were forest and country paths, which were not in my map. I had to ask the people in the villages, and it was amazing how, their simple directions were very clear (when you see the pines turn right and after a while turn left, and I didn´t get lost!)

It  was great, but I was getting very tired. All day up and down, and sometimes in paths, it was tiring. I got to Aranda del Duero much later than planned, but my host was fine with it. When I got there I took a shower and we went out for dinner, with a friend of her.

It was actually fun, and the food was great. We went to two different bars and ordered wine and some small portions of food. The ham is great around here, as well as the cheese, and the wine is just superb. In one of these bars we could see the wine cellar. In this city the whole old town is full of them, around 16 km of underground tunnels to keep the wine. It was very interesting to be able to see one.

But not much later than midnight we went home, as I was very tired. And there I tried to blog, but I wasn´t able to write a single word, I fell asleep even before the word document opened.

Today was exhausting, so I think I will take it easy tomorrow and do only 100km. from there it will take only 2 days to reach my friend´s house, around 300 km more. But I really need some rest. So I will wake up late and go slow.
