21th of June – Downhill till Avignon and up again through the vineyards.

157,18 km Ginasservis – Saint Quentin la Poterie

What a great day, basically downhill! What I climbed yesterday I went down today. I got today to my cousin’s house, so from the morning I was in the mood to arrive, but to fight this I decided not to look at the watch for over 100km. It was quite relaxed.

In the morning I had a breakfast with my hosts, but quite quickly, as they had to go to work. When they left they showed me how to close everything, so I could pack more peacefully. But still, a few minutes later I left too, around 8, to try to avoid the warmest hours.

I had to take a detour, because there was a chance that one road was going to be closed due to constructions, but as I knew it, it was ok. I had some ups and downs at the beginning. But soon it started going down for almost 80km. It was fun, the average speed went up, and I didn´t look at the time for over 4 hours.

On the way I saw a kiosk that was selling fruits, and fresh juices, so I decided to stop. In this place there was a woman selling melons, peaches and juices. She only had juices in glass bottles, so I bought one, but I drunk it there with her. It was really refreshing and thick, it was filling like eating a kilo of fruit.

When I was drinking it I was talking with the woman. She only spoke French, but as it´s not very different from Spanish, and I learnt it one year, several years ago, we could communicate a bit. I must have looked hungry, because she started giving me peaches. The ones that had some ugly part, she cut it off and then gave it to me. I had to tell her that I could not eat more, because she kept offering.

I kept going towards Avignon, but I was completely full. It was hard to keep going. And soon after I had to take a national road, so it was very busy and the cars were going much faster. Luckily in a few kilometers I was already in the center. I just crossed the city, I went around the city walls, which were nice, and that´s it. I took the wrong bridge out, but it was ok, because then I took a small road instead of the national one.

From there I thought it was only 35 km but at the end it was almost 50. It was a beautiful ride, through small country roads, next to fruit trees and vineyards, but it was all the time small hills. It was not that hard but it was just the middle of the day and there was no shadow and it was hot, very hot. But I managed to get to Saint Quentin la Poterie, crossing other small beautiful villages.

My cousin was waiting for me with some Galician and Spanish typical food. It was delicious. I will try to put the recipe of the “Galician empanada”, as soon as possible. And after a while talking we decided to go to take a bath to the Pont du Gard. It´s an amazing place. We swam in a river in a beautiful area, next to a Roman Aqueduct. It´s an impressive place.

Afterwards we went to Uzes, the biggest village around here, which is medieval. It was really lively as it was the day of music in France. People were playing and dancing in the streets. They told me that usually in France, after 5 pm, there is no one in the streets, but today was an exception. Here we went for an ice-cream, and I had one of honey and caramel with salty butter. Very interesting and tasty flavors for ice cream.

From there we went home and we still had some dinner and talked for a long time. But when we realized how late it was we went to sleep.

Today was a bit different. It was hard to cycle during midday; when usually I rest, but it was worth to get to a great lunch and after go to an amazing place for a bath. Tomorrow I will also stay here, I need to rest, and I want to relax in the beautiful Provencal fields.

20th of June – Uphill till Provence

172,36 km Nice – Ginasservis

It was really hard today. Both mentally and physically exhausting. I thought it was going to be less kilometers, and it was basically uphill. I was trying to enjoy the ride, but it was hard to focus on something different than the way.

It was easy to get out of Nice, it was just to get to the seaside and follow it. As I thought it was a day with few kilometers, I decided to take it easy and go to the tourist information office. It was quite stupid, because it was information for the whole region, and they didn´t have maps at all.

So I continued, and the first town I had to cross was a bit complicated, but I succeeded. The problem was Grasse. It was horrible. I could not find the right way and it was a city in a hill, so I got really tired. But from there it was downhill till my first stop.

It´s fun riding in the French roads. Cyclist are respected and there are lots of bike ways, usually on the side of the road. And it´s great that every cyclist says “bon jour” to each other. It reminds me of my brother, whose first words were actually those.

Lake St. Cassien was the best choice for lunch. I was expecting to be alone there, but there were 2 families. Anyway it was a great place, the water was clear and had a perfect temperature for swimming. I think it was the longest stop I´ve done so far. It was great swimming and relaxing there.

But it was time to continue, as I knew I had to climb some hills of around 800 meters. There was a nice view, but it was hard to enjoy. It was very hot, and kilometers where just growing in the signs. I ended doing almost 30 km extra more than I planned.

I crossed the natural park of Verdon, following a bike rout, most of the way. There were lots of trees and forests, so putting my tent there would not have been a problem, but I had already a host in a small village, and I wanted to get there. The towns in this region are small and always on top of a little hill. Even thought beautiful, I was a bit tired of going up and down.

I met a man in this paths also travelling by bike. He was much older than me but he did even longer trips. This year he was only going from Provence till Vienna and back through Paris, but 2 years ago he went from Paris to Peking.

I got to Ginasservis almost at 9. I was exhausted, and it seemed that I was not going to be able to get here. I enjoyed some dinner with my hosts and chat for a while, but I was falling asleep, so I decided to go to bed.

Today might have been one of the toughest days. Crossing the Tatra was hard, but I was expecting it, somehow, but today was longer and harder than I thought. At least tomorrow I will have to go down all what I climbed today.

20 de junio – Cuesta arriba hasta Provenza.

172,36 km Niza – Ginasservis

Aunque preciosos, me he cansado de subir y bajar.

He llegado a Ginasservis casi a las 9.

19th of June – Next to the Ligurian Coast, and crossing 3 international borders.

161,29 km Savona – Nice

I´m in the last country I will have to cross before getting to Spain, this really seems the end, but I still have around one fourth left. Today it was probably one of the most beautiful days of the whole trip. Many times I like places, but today I liked the whole tour.

When I woke up, Massimo, my host and me went for a walk. We bought some bread and something for lunch, and before returning home he showed me a couple places. I wanted to see the Sistine Chapel they have here, but it was too early. We also had a coffee in a bar owned by his friends. I like this places, it looks like a small village, where everybody knows each other.

I left a bit before 10 and I was expecting lots of traffic. It was a main road next to the cast on a sunny Sunday, but for my surprise it was quite empty. Maybe because it was late. It´s really beautiful this coast, it´s unbelievable. It´s all the time up and down, but the uphill are not that hard, and coming down the views are amazing. I took some pictures, that I will put down, but they don´t show how great it is.

My first stop was Alessio. Here they have a wall with signatures of lots of famous, and not so famous people, some of them are fictitious characters. Here I also asked in the tourist information office for a map, and it was a great decision. They showed me a bike road, which ended up being fantastic.

This bike road was only 20 km long, but it was the best bike road I´ve ever seen. It´s the highway for bikes. It goes on the old railway path, so there are even tunnels. I´ve never seen something like this. The only problem is that it ends suddenly, just after a sign saying that there are 6 km more. It finishes at the end of San Remo.

I haven´t been talking about how many cyclists there are. In Slovenia it was the first time since Finland that I saw some other cyclotourists. It was a couple, but they were going to hotels. But in Italy everybody uses the bike, even nuns. And of course, here in the coast there are thousands of people riding it for fun.

From San Remo I kept on the main road till France. Soon after I crossed the border to Monaco. It was nothing special, but for someone who knows the F1 circuit by heart, like me, it was fun to go in the same roads. From there I went straight to Nice, not without surprises. I tried to take a shortcut, but it was through a mountain. It was really hard going up.

But there was another surprise: my hosts live in another hill! Again going up, but I found the place easily, and the views they have from their terrace was totally worth it. I saw a really nice sunset while we were having dinner and chatting about bikes and trips. (Thanks a lot for everything!). The dinner was typical, with the cheese after the main dish, just before dessert.

They recommended me a couple thing to see on my way tomorrow, which is not going to be as easy as I thought, because it´s uphill. And they told me of the trip that they are going to do in a couple years, when her daughter grows a bit older. Around the whole France! Almost 6000km, and they are going to use a different bike, the Scorpion FX (you can see the picture below).

So as I said, I think today was one of the most beautiful days. When they finish the bike road all the way through the Ligurian coast (I hope in the next 50 years) I will come again, and do it much more slowly, and stopping in the beaches and towns.

Nunca he visto algo así.

Poco después he cruzado la frontera a Mónaco.

18th of June – From the mighty Po to the Mediterranean

157,82 km  Pavia – Savona

Finally I made it, the Mediterranean it´s just below my window! I didn´t know how much I missed the sea. Almost 6 weeks without seeing it, and I missed it, as I always lived by it. I had some mountains, but I did most of the day in small roads, so it was fun.

From the beginning of the day I had this feeling that I should hurry to get to Savona. I was trying to get rid of it with many stops, but it was not easy. It was sunny and I wanted to jump into the sea, maybe that´s the reason.

At the beginning it was fun to cross the covered bridge I had seen yesterday, and not far from there I crossed the Po.

I only did around 30 km in the main roads, so the rest of the day was great, especially the second half, over the mountains to speed down to the sea. All day has been very windy, and it was annoying. It was hard even downhill, sometimes, and I was going much slower.

I stopped many times, till I got the feeling that I was not in a hurry, and I started to enjoy. There were some mountains but it was not very long. There were lots of beautiful places, and in the uphills there were lots of wooden benches, so sometimes I sat on them.

But the best thing of the day was the last 25 km, going downhill till the sea. Still it was windy so I didn´t dare to try to break the speed record. But it was enjoyable. I think downhill the view is always better.

When I got Savona I found the street where my hosts live without problems, but I could not find the number. I called and they came to pick me up. We put my things in their house, and when they asked me what I wanted to do first, the answer was clear: jump into the sea! So I did. It was cloudy and the Italians thought I was a bit crazy, but it was over 25ºC.

After the bath we went to a barbecue party in a bar quite close to the city. It was expensive, for me at least, but I have to say that it was in a great place right on the beach and the quality of the meat and the cheese was excellent.

Later we went for a night tour of Savona. Of course, the things were closed, but it was nice to walk around. We stopped in a bar and had an Italian beer, with the little snacks. It was warm, but suddenly it started raining, so we went home. It was getting late anyway. Before going to bed we talked for a while, but I was tired.

It was a fun day, and the feeling that I got when I saw the sea when I was coming down the mountain was great. Tomorrow I will keep going through the coast till Nice, it´s going to be all the way main road, but I heard is really beautiful.

Y lo he hecho.

17th of June – Flying through “la Padana superiore”.

173,70 km Verona – Pavia

I´m really impressed with myself today. It was more kilometers than I thought, but still I did it much faster. I tried to go through small roads, but at the end I followed the main one.

I wanted to leave at 6, to avoid the traffic, and I left before 7 (a few minutes), so I think it was a success. There were few cars till the Lake Garda. There I took smaller roads, to see the water. And there were more cars around there. The lake it´s nice, but most of the time you can´t get to it because there are houses, just like in the Lake Balaton.

From there I did follow small roads, but there were as many cars as in the main one, going at the same speed, in a narrower place, so I decided to continue through the national road. It was the best choice! It was really peaceful.

Of course, I kept crossing the towns, instead of going around. I really like them, and they are easy to cross, once you´ve done it twice. I saw lots of churches, castles, fortresses… Italy doesn´t let the visitors get bored.

Without any problems I got to Pavia. I had contacted my host, before, so I just had to find his place. I was looking for the name of a street, when one guy came to me and gave me directions. And then he asked if I was from couchsurfing. It turns out he was another person I requested a couch from.

I arrived to Marco´s house, and we talked for a while. He had to go to work, but he gave me a map, the keys, and some places that I had to visit. I still had a shower and rested before going out, and then I started visiting … churches! It´s full of them. They have some nice ones. And there is one with the remains of St. Agustin. When I went to see it, they were doing a mass. I decided to wait, not to disturb, but it took forever. But afterwards I could visit it freely.

They have a nice covered bridge, from the fourteenth century, and several towers. Before there used to be more than a hundred towers, and now there are just a few left. I didn´t have time to see the castle or the university, but they probably are worth seeing, maybe next time.

For lunch I wanted to have pizza al taglio (pizza by the weight), but when I entered the place I changed my mind and got mozzarella balls with meat inside. And for desert, ice-cream.  In this country they make great ice cream, but I still think the one in Kielce was better.

Later I met my host and we went for a vegan apperitivo. It was ok, in a square. But I think it was too expensive. I don´t understand how Ngo things are so expensive, I´m convinced that if they were cheaper, more people would come and they would get more money.

Anyway, in the square there was a band too. They were playing Italian music from the late 70´s. It was fun to watch. But the mosquitoes were killing me. They explained me that Pavia it´s famous for the mosquitoes. And as in Lapland, they do championships to see who can kill more of them.

After a while the group decided to go to another place to dance to 80´s disco music, but I was really tired and I went home. Tomorrow I will get to the Mediterranean beach. I´m really looking forward jumping into the water, but I will have to cross the end of the Alps first.

173,70 km Verona – Pavia

Hoy me he impresionado a mí mismo.

He visto muchas iglesias, castillos, fortalezas …

He llegado a Pavia sin ningún problema.

¡Iglesias!

16th of June – Verona, the city of love?

0 km Verona

They call it the city of love, but I´m not so sure it is. Of course, Shakespeare made it the city of Romeo and Juliet (even though the popular story might have been from Venice), but it doesn´t have a happy ending. It might be romantic, but it´s a love that didn´t end good. So I don´t understand how people go crazy about it.

Anyway, in the morning I was feeling better, but I decided to stay. My hosts are great, and it´s lots of fun to talk about bicycle trips (I met them through warmshowers.org). It´s interesting to see how other people travel by bike.

After breakfast I went to the city and started walking around. First I went to the library to get the code for the wifi hot spots. It´s free, but you need to sign up. And afterwards I started visiting churches. As you might have guessed I really enjoy this kind of buildings, so Italy is a fantastic place for me.

I saw St. Anastasia, St.Fermo, the cathedral, St. Zeno. For this ones you have to pay to get in, but if you get a combined ticket is not expensive. My favorite one might have been St.Fermo, the cathedral was not that nice. I don´t have anything against the other 2, but I´m just choosing the best for me.

In between the churches I stopped for a cappuccino in a nice square. Usually I don’t do it, but in Italy it just feels natural. I also went to Juliet´s house, but there were so many people that in 2 minutes I left, it´s a XIX century house anyway. Around midday I went up the castle for a nice view of the whole city, and I crossed the roman bridge.

After this I got hungry, but it was too late, so the pizza places they recommended me were closed. I found one in Piazza Bra. It was full of tourists, but none the less it was very good. It was not cheap, but I was hungry.

Later I kept walking without any direction, till I decided to enter the Arena. It´s a roman amphitheater quite well preserved. It´s actually the second biggest after the Coliseum. It was ok, but as they have shows in here, they were changing the decorations, so it was not possible to see the whole thing.

After this I went home, as I was getting tired. I had dinner with my hosts (thank you! You where very nice!), and then we went for an ice-cream. It was great, and the strawberry one tastes exactly like the one my father does.

Before going to sleep, they showed me a cooker made of cans, and they even gave me one. It´s really light and it only uses alcohol, I think I will use it soon. Afterwards I went to bed, to be able to wake up early tomorrow.

I decided to stay because I always say I will come to this country, but I never do, and once here I have no excuse. I liked the city, so I don´t regret at all staying an extra day. Tomorrow will be one of  the few days I will do through the main road, so I really want to wake up early and try to avoid the traffic.

Y después he empezado a ver iglesias.

15th of June – The Italian plain

158,22  Oderzo – Verona

This part of Italy is completely flat. It´s true that the landscape is basically the same, without any changes, but every little town has a church several centuries old. So today I was crossing more cities, because it´s the most interesting thing.

I didn´t wake very early and I had breakfast with my hosts. Is the first time I have a sweet breakfast, in this trip. In Eastern Europe they always eat something salty, but in Italy, as well as in Spain, pastries and cereals are much more common. After I packed, we took some pictures and I left.

The first stop was Treviso. I was planning on getting a cappuccino, in a nice square, but as I was getting closer I started feeling sad. I don´t know why. It´s true that I have the feeling that the trip is finishing, but I don´t understand why I was in this mood. Still I found a place, which ended up being the center of the old town, and after the first sip I felt much better. I liked Treviso after all. They have a Ryanair airport, so I will try to come for weekend.

From there I went till Vicenza, but through small villages. It was quite confusing, as I was not following roads, but streets, so I had to stop a lot and check the way. It was really nice, and it´s amazing how every little town has something of historical importance.

On the way I had to cross the railway rails, and it was a time where lots of trains crossed, so I had to wait a long time, but as there was a park close by I went to some tables and had lunch. It was a fine place, but it was full of mosquitoes, and I got bitten several times.

Vicenza is quite beautiful. I just crossed the old town, but I was impressed by the Basilica. Here I contacted my next host in Verona, and arranged to meet them 2 hours later. I thought it was 40 km away, so I would have time to get there early and have some time to find the place.

Well, it turned out it´s 56 km, so I hurried. I was going very fast. It´s so flat that I could do it. I even passed lots of people dressed like professionals and with nice road bikes. Some of this people thought I was making fun of them, and started going faster to pass me again. They were not happy.

Finally I made it to the Piazza Bra, the main square, only 15 minutes late, but they were already waiting for me. I was impressed with the city, but I had to find my hosts. It didn´t take long, as I´m easy to spot. And from there we went to her house, where I met her husband and I could take a shower. And for dinner, pasta! I love this country.

Afterwards they went to the movies and I went for a walk. I´m thinking to stay another day, but still I wanted to walk around the place in the evening. I liked it but I was so tired I decided to go home quite early. On the way I started feeling really bad, and cold, even though it was 25ºC. At their place I was freezing and feeling even worst. So I went to bed immediately, closing the windows and wearing a sweater.

So the day was beautiful, and it´s a pity that I feel so bad now. I really hope I´m not sick. It will be funny if I got ill here, where is really hot, instead of in the north. Anyway, if I´m feeling bad in the morning for sure I will stay one more day, and if I´m fine, I will see.

15 de junio– La llanura Italiana

158,22  Oderzo – Verona

Cuando estaba ahí he contactado a mi siguiente anfitrión, y he quedado 2 horas más tarde.

De camino a casa me he empezado a encontrar fatal, y tenía frio, aunque hacía 25ºC.

Espero no ponerme enfermo.
