Training/ discovering Rogaland: Randaberg

I had to try the new wheel and brakes of the bike. After working on it, I really could not wait to hit the road and do some kilometers. So I did. A few minutes before I looked at the map and decided where I wanted to go. A little bit north of here there is a really nice village, well actually a haven´t been to the town itself, but the nature around is really nice. So I took the bike and went that way. Luckily, once I got to the coast there was a cycling rout “Nordsjøruta”, that went all the way I had intended to go. I followed small roads, not allowed for cars, most of the way, and I had lots of fun. Of course the closer I got to the city, the more crowded the roads were and the less chance I had to enjoy. But overall it was great.

I covered almost 50 km in less than 2, 5 hours, stopping many times to take pictures and to think about the way, so I´m really satisfied with the speed also. Doing this walk I thought of something: to do as many of these as possible. For one side I get to know the province and for the other I train a bit. That’s the reason of the title. As I´m planning to do many I also put where they were made.

Entrenando y descubriendo Rogaland: Randaberg

Para probar la rueda y los frenos nuevos he llevado la bici a dar una vuelta. Tras un rápido vistazo al mapa, he visto que un poco más al norte hay una especie de península, y que no está muy lejos. Así que ahí he ido. He tenido la suerte que desde que he llegado a la costa había una ruta para bicis “Nordsjøruta”. La he seguido durante su recorrido hasta un puerto, donde tenía que coger un ferry si quería seguirla. Desde ahí he vuelto a la ciudad, pero por toda la costa. Algo que no había visto antes.

La vuelta son algo menos de 50km. Y ha sido muy bonita, la costa en esta zona es increíble. Visto el éxito de la ruta, he decidido hacer más, con dos objetivos. Primero, entrenarme para el viaje, y segundo, para conocer más la zona. De ahí el título del post.

Fixing and learning day

Today I changed the tire of the bike, because I had a flat tire a couple days back. Once I was at it I decided to change the brakes too. It sounds easy, but it was the first time I did any of the two. Actually I´m glad I practiced before the trip, there are a couple things that YouTube videos don´t teach you. My landlord, who is also borrowing me the bike, knows about these things, so he helped me doing it. It was not as hard as I thought, but I´m not sure I could have done it without any help.

My landlord has traveled around half of the world on a bike. He did a similar trip to the one I´m planning, across South America, and many others. And he was giving me some advices, especially about bikes and materials. It was really interesting and helpful. He also recommended me to go to the north by boat. So I´ll look into that again, I might change my plans.

Arreglando la bici


Hoy he cambiado la rueda a la bici, pues se me había pinchado hace un par de días. Y ya que estaba en ello he cambiado los frenos de atrás. Necesitaba un cambio, ya casi no frenaban,y con hielo no me gusta frenar solo con los de delante. Bueno, la complicación de todo esto es que no lo había hecho antes. No me alegro de que se me haya pinchado la rueda, pero sí de tener la oportunidad de practicar antes del viaje.


El que me alquila la casa sabe bastante sobre bicis, y me ha ayudado con todo el proceso. No ha sido muy difícil, pero no estoy seguro de que lo hubiera conseguido sin su ayuda. También me ha dado consejos sobre bicis y sobre material para el viaje. Él ha viajado por medio mundo en bici, así que tendré en cuenta sus consejos. También me ha dicho que el viaje en barco al norte merece la pena, así que me lo volveré a mirar.

I´ve got a date!

26 of April, it´s the starting day of the trip! I still have to book the plane ticket, but I already decided. It´s a bit later than what I had originally planned. There was a moment I was thinking about going by boat. There are these trips from Bergen till the north. It sounds interesting and fun, but, without taking into account that they are 3 times the price of a plane ticket, it takes 4 days to get there. It´s not that I mind being 4 days in a boat, probably it´s a really beautiful trip, but I want to start cycling!!

2 weekends before that I´ll go home to leave most of my stuff (and to see my friends and family, of course). Probably I will also get a bike then (and there), but I´m also looking here, so it´s not so certain this last detail. Any suggestions about the kind of bike and wheels I need are welcomed!

Ya tengo fecha!

EL 26 de abril. Ese es el día en el que voy a empezar el viaje. Solo me queda coger el billete de avión, pero ya lo he decidido. Es algo más tarde de lo que había planificado al principio. Hubo unos días en los que estaba mirando ir en barco hasta el norte. Hay unos barcos que salen desde Bergen. El eslogan de esta compañía es: El viaje más bonito del mundo. Seguro que es increíble, pero aparte de costar 3 veces más que el avión, dura cuatro días, y ya he retrasado el viaje más de lo que quería. ¡Quiero empezar a pedalear!

Un par de semanas antes voy a pasar por casa, en Getxo, para dejar mis cosas. Tal vez compre la bici allí, pero tengo que seguir mirando. Acepto cualquier consejo en bicis y material que necesite.

Stories of the Russian visa

I haven´t got it yet, I just wanted to talk about the process.

Getting this visa keeps being a bit of a nightmare, but still trying. I called a few times, they didn´t answer. At the third or fourth time, they actually picked up! Well, I had dialed the wrong number, so I talked to a really nice guy from a national television channel. After that I finally got to speak English with a girl at the consulate, and she told me that I need to have the hotels booked. I don´t exactly know when I´ll be there! I already sent an email to see what I need to do to get it. Does everybody have this problem, or it´s just me?

Hopefully I will have this stamp in my passport soon.

Historias del visado ruso

Todavía no lo he conseguido, pero quería comentaros lo que me está costando.

El consulado, para llamadas relacionadas con el visado solo atienden un par de horas al día, y el horario no me coincide siempre. Aun así llamé varias veces sin que me cogiesen. Al tercer día, más o menos, consigo que me cojan. Pero resulta que había marcado mal el número, así que estuve hablando con los de la televisión nacional noruega. Eso sí, su inglés era muy bueno.

Finalmente conseguí que me cogiesen la llamada, y me dijeron que necesito tener reservados los hoteles. Esto va a ser un poco problemático. Les he mandado un email a ver si me lo pueden explicar bien, o hay alguna alternativa. ¿Todos tenéis este problema para ir a Rusia, o soy yo que tengo mala suerte?

Espero tener un sello como de la foto en mi pasaporte dentro de poco.

Great news everyone!

Actually they are not so fantastic, it´s just an update, but I like this sentence from Futurama.

Finally I got on Facebook. I didn´t use my real last name, I put bicycloud. I thought it was good at the beginning, but I might change that. As expected I used most of the weekend just talking with old friends I hadn´t talked to in a long time, answering messages on the wall, and similar things (I still don´t really know how to use half of them). I managed to put this “I like” buttons on this blog. You can see it if you scroll down a bit, on the right, as well as a link to the facebook page. So go click I like immediately! Just kidding, I´m planning on getting 10 billion people to click on it anyway, so one more doesn´t really matter. 

Soon I will start using twitter too. And probably flicker, so I will put there many more pictures than I do here. I don´t know what else. If you know any other useful social media, tools and gadgets, tell me, I like trying this things.

I´m not going to put a picture of facebook, instead you can see a picture that I took when the fjord froze. I had never seen the sea frozen before.

Nuevas nuevas

¡Por fin estoy en facebook! Ya sé que he tardado bastante, pero ya estoy ahí. Llevaba evitándolo bastante tiempo, pero al final he caído. Espero no acabar como mis alumnos, que están en facebook en vez de hacer sus ejercicios. Bueno, he conseguido poner esos botones de “me gusta”, así que ya sabéis. Si queréis encontrarme me he puesto bicycloud de apellido, no creo que haya muchos. También he creado una página en facebook, pero de momento solo tienes los posts que voy poniendo aquí.

Dentro de poco estaré en twitter y en flicker, si se os ocurre algún otro sitio, o gadget, decidme. Ahora que he empezado no  pienso parar.

Bikes in London: the solution?

It´s true that I had an Internet free weekend, but not bike free. London is actually full of bikes, despite the horrible traffic. It´s quite cheap to rent a public bike, just don´t forget that the crazy Brits drive on the other side of the roadJ. Some of the bus lanes are also for bikes, which is really helpful.

I forgot to take pictures of these things, so the pictures are not mine.

Bicis en Londres: ¿la solución?

A pesar de no tener Internet, mientras estaba en Londres no he dejado de pensar en el blog y en las bicis. Me ha sorprendido que hubiera tanta gente en bici por la ciudad, ya que hay muchísimos coches.

Se pueden alquilar bicis públicas, incluso si eres turista, a muy bajo precio. Aquí os dejo el link. Pero no os olvidéis de ir por el carril de la izquierda.

Otra cosa que me ha hecho gracia es que los carriles de autobús y taxi, lo son también para las bicis.

No he sacado fotos de esto, así que las fotos de ahí arriba no son mías.

London

In older posts I said I was going to go to London, well, now I´m back from there. It was a really pleasant long weekend. It was quite cold, but at least it didn’t rain.

 It´s not the first time I´m in London, but still I did, and saw, some of the most touristic things: Houses of parliament, the British Museum, Tower Bridge, Tate Modern… But I also went to places I hadn´t been before, like the Sherlock Holmes museum (In Baker Street 221b, of course), and the Globe theater. I also ate a Sunday roast, really worth trying.

These following days I will write a few things about London, but mainly I´ll be adding comments in Spanish to the previews posts.

Londres

Como ya venía avisando he estado un fin de semana (largo) en Londres. Ha estado muy bien, creo que es la primera vez que estoy allí y no me llueve.

Como cada vez que voy, he visitado las atracciones típicas, como el British Museum o Tower Bridge. Pero esta vez también he visto cosas que no había visto antes, el museo de Sherlock Holmes, y el teatro Globe. El primero la verdad es que es muy pequeño, está bien para decir que has estado ahí, pero poco más. El teatro es muy interesante, y los guías, al ser también actores, explican muy bien.

En los próximos días comentaré un par de cosas sobre la ciudad pero sobretodo pondré los textos en castellano a los posts anteriores (como había prometido). Y gracias Carlos por el evento, y a todos los que os habéis hecho seguidores!
